The Tourist

Switzerland

A personal and ongoing project:

Switzerland is a small country but the breathtaking Alps and the many crystalline lakes draw in visitors from all over the planet. My work takes your eye to the world of the tourist as they visit my homeland.

The tourist has journeyed to a new destination in search of joy and surprise, as well as immersing themselves in nature and the great outdoors. Their daily life is far away. The way they dress and their personal behaviour might change, a kind of code switching almost. But one thing remains common to almost every tourist: they love taking photographs of their experiences.

As Susan Sontag put it in her book “On Photography”: “The simple action of handling a camera in itself is soothing, and lessens the feeling of disorientation that is often heightened when traveling. Photographs become the unquestionable proof that one has indeed undertaken the journey, gotten through the schedule, and had one’s fun while doing so.”
